Camera Labs

I was with a group of friends in a trip to Georgia (Saqartvelo). Everybody took pictures, I was the only one with a DSLR, and everybody else had compacts and/or iPhones. I was recording RAW files and the others jpeg. After our return we all met at one’s home to view the pictures we all took. I’ve prepared my shots in Lightroom, (I have calibrated my monitor with Datacolor’s spider3 system), and exported to jpeg with max quality using sRGB. All the others had their pictures straight out of the camera. We viewed them on a big plasma TV connected to a laptop using Windows’ file browser to view the pictures. To my horror my carefully balanced pictures looked about 2 stops darker than what I’ve seen on my calibrated monitor and everybody else’s plain vanilla jpegs looked ok.
I strongly suspect that I’ve done something wrong, but I have no clue what, and how to ensure that my pictures seen on another system will be reasonably close to what I see on mine.

Well first of all, let's see some of those processed JPEGs to see how they look on our computers and displays!

I also find a histogram is a good indicator of exposure and overall lightness or darkness regardless of the display.

The lighting in the first one looks fine to me on my monitor, #2 is light, I think -EV may have helped with this one, looks over exposed. #3 I see you used -2/3EV and it looks fine for me. I cannot say any of them are under exposed.

What do you throw out, your monitor or calibration software.

Same as 4xxxx. #1 looks fine om my (uncalibrated) screen.
The blue sky in #3 looks to be much darker on the right side though. Did you have a CPL on, maybe `tilted` to the right?
I like the images btw.

Radu, Just a late thought, many P&S cameras when shooting auto tend to use a wide aperture to increase the speed and reduce camera shake, this makes them look sharp but generally over exposed. I found this on my old P&S and shots by other people.

I would try viewing the shots on other TV's, maybe your friend has a bummer.

#1 and 3 look spot on to me with #2 looking a little bright.

So nothing new to add there.

What I would say is I have never set anything up on my screen. Never actually thought about it until I joined this site. I just assumed what I could see was what I was supposed to see.??

Thanks for the reply SUNRISE. I suppose that you have been in an Office Depot like store where you can see lots of monitors with the same image on them. You don’t have to look hard; actually you can see in a glance that there are no two monitors that have the same color or brightness.

Monitors vary, you would of course have to try the images out on multiple ones to get an idea of how it looks. Different screens use different technology as well, remember. There is LCD, LED, to name a couple.

I suppose when I turn on the PC...and log into a forum...or facebook... I look at the White parts and if I see white I assume it must be correct...This forum I assume has White, Black a brown/orange/red border across the top. it also carries what I see as RED/GREEN/BLUE above Labs in the title and although the BLUE is not a dark blue to me more a paler blue....I simply assumed that was what I was supposed to see...

I will give this some more thought...and see if I can find something I know is a certain colour and go with that...I know for example what colour some products are..so I will go look at their trade marked images.
