Hi folks,

Sandy Bridge E is now in the public domain, replete with its LGA2011 socket.
AnandTech have done a good review here which includes some comparative PhotoShop CS4 benchmarks.

Oh dear, I can see my not so aged i7 920 based workstation getting a motherboard/CPU/memory transplant next year!

Bob.

Ivy Bridge can't be that far away either...

Long story short: skip the new E series, buy a 2600k i5 instead, unless you want to pay 60% more for a 10% speed boost?

Too short IMHO. Some tasks are a lot faster than with i5 2600K. But I agree that it wouldn't be an automatic upgrade except, possibly, for folks like myself who got lumbered with LGA 1366.

But I'll wait a while and continue to read the reviews. The Asus ROG Rampage IV Extreme (review) looks interesting but then so does the Gigabyte G1.Assassin 2 (preview).

Update: Another Sandy Bridge E review from a source I trust is this one from bit-tech.net. Looks like I could expect at least a 50% speed boost from the CPU side of things if I were to opt for an i7-3960X in comparison to my current i7-920. :D

Then again, every major speed boost in your components can reveal a new bottleneck, which can make "properly" upgrading a costly adventure!

Then there's also overclocking

On reflection, it might be a lot cheaper and easier to upgrade from my lowly i7-920 to an i7-990X. Most of the speed for a lot less money given I wouldn't need to buy a new motherboard, memory or cooler!

Next year, though...

Pricing on the CPUs and required mobos makes it clear that this is only meant for those who want the best of the best. Seems to me that the main advantage is in the memory bandwidth rather than the 2 extra cores.
