Getting up there to take that is out of reach for mere mortals for sure. Never mind the time lapse, even the random single shot would be amazing enough. If I ever were to get up there, I'd have to resist the temptation to ask if I can pop outside to get a better shot without window reflections.
I have been wondering a little though... how much would it cost to get some weather balloons and what rules are there on their release? Inspired in part by this
James May's Man Lab episode where they send the balloons with cameras up to 85k+ feet (16 miles) or so. Not quite as high as NASA maybe, but about as close as we can get our kit possibly. For comparison, according to wikipedia the ISS orbits between 173-286 miles.
