Extenders are a tool like anything else. You don't have to use it, but it is another option. One that is now more restricted on the X. Even if you have the expensive stuper-tele lenses, sometimes you might still need even more.

As for the "not needed" argument that Bob quoted from, again that's like many other areas of photography. You can do a lot with any kit, but there will be some point when you reach the limits of that kit. Having that bit more could make the difference.

But to put this in perspective, the X is designed with a specific goal in mind. And in that area it is possibly the best yet. But it isn't the best at everything. At the end of the day you do the best with what you've got.

According to Mark Burnhill, the new EOS-1D X is the best performing video DSLR Canon has produced. Below is a real world break down of features.
No line skipping in video as it uses the whole sensor
Very little rolling shutter, the still features of the camera have improved this area of video performance.
You can now use the shutter button to start and stop movie recording. Remotes can be used for this too.
There are time coding options
There is a new dedicated button to magnify the image.

I agree with Evan. Nikon does need to step up their game fast. This is assuming they still can produce cameras in Japan. Thailand is out of the question for now. Though, I believe they only had their non-FF bodies made there.

I've always been a Nikon shooter. Since the early 1980's. But Canon has always run what appears to be a well managed company. Manufacturing all their products in Japan. Including their processors. Whereas Nikon sources theirs from Sony. While not a deal breaker is a little disappointing.

I am ready to buy a FF body. Was hoping to see the D800 from Nikon right about now but that doesn't look like it's going to happen. No word. Nor any word for the 5D Mark III. Even the rumours are vague. The 1D X is very nice (spec wise) but I doubt I'd bother spending 7k on a camera body being that I am a hobbyist. Which is why I'm hoping to get my hands on either a 5D Mark III or D800 (non-pro-body). But when are we going to see both??

I've not read all posts so forgive if my observation has been illuminated/debated...

The 1D series cameras are the best constructed, strongest and weather seal beasts (bodies) that Canon offers...

Given the 5D bodies don't come close, does anyone really expect Canon to fix this...make the 5D Mark III a tank like the 1DX, why?

I don't...for hi-res I'd guess a 5D Mark III for the semipro (non arctic/death valley shooters) and a 1DXs for the pros...both 30+ mp!

I'm still happily shooting with my 40D, EOS3s and building an L glass collection...the 1DX just looks fantastic...but I'd settle for a 7D with articulated screen...even the 5D Mark III is a dream for my budget!

If Canon wanted to send me a 1DX to "test" for a few years...I'd say okay

I don't think they will upgrade it to the 1D level in terms of weather sealing but maybe they'll reach the 7D level.

Hi folks,

In the first of a promised series of six videos, accessible here, CPN Europe offer The EOS-1D X’s AF system explained for four minutes of viewing pleasure.

I'm not sure that there's much new to learn and I rather came away thinking I'd like one of those "table" touch screen monitors which I don't think is quite what Canon intended me to think!

Interesting video. I suppose the five presets they mentioned could be useful, but you'd think that anyone buying this camera would understand the Canon AF system enough to not need presets.

One likely benifit of them though is the speed with which you can change from one preset to the next in the heat of shooting, where with the 1D IV it takes going into the AF custom function menu to tweak things, which is that much more time consuming.

Does any one know if the 1D-X will be made in Japan? Are all Canon DSLRs still made in Japan? As are their lenses?

Most likely Japan. I think the cheaper stuff is from Taiwan, Malaysia, etc. while the more expensive stuff is made in Japan.

My 1000D, Rebel 2000, 18-55IS kit, 55-250IS, 50 1.8, 28-80 II, 75-300 III were Malaysia or Taiwan.
50D, 50 1.4 USM, 35 2.0, 100 2.8 macro USM, 17-55IS USM, 28-135 USM were all Japan for me.

Don't know why I thought all Canon products are made in Japan. Though, I did recall checking for their mid to hi-end DSLR's. Not sure if I checked for the Rebel's.

I'm asking because of the damage to northern Japan. And because they are still in a recovery process. Wondered if that affected Canon as it has for Nikon. Never mind the recent hit Nikon has taken for their Thailand production plant.

Hope the 5D Mark III will continue to be made in Japan. It just sits better with me. Even though I'm sure if the gear were made elsewhere Canon would try their best to maintain a level of quality they're happy with. Love to own the 1D-X but as I said it's overkill for a non-working photographer. But you never know..

What I'm interested to see is how much of the 1D-X's tech will trickle down to the 5D Mark III.

As far as video recording capabilities...the 5D Mark 3's might even better the 1D-X's incorporating Canon's "Cinema" technology rumoured to be included in upcoming DSLRs..

Will be very interesting to see what kind of landmark innovations Canon implements in the 5D3.

I'm also interested on how it will trickle down to the APS-C sensor format. If Canon used the same tech on a smaller sensor and kept the res around 18MP, each cell would have 40% the light gathering capability. 40% of 200,000 ISO isn't too shabby.

APS-C format? The 5D cameras have always been full-frame. Where you referring to APS-C format cameras like the 7D (or the upcoming 7D Mark II)?

There should be some announcement made this month for the 5D Mark III. If not when the 1D-X hits the market in late March.

My gut feel is that Canon will save cash and recycle the 1D X sensor into the 5D3, although of course still lacking all the other 1D X toys so don't expect to get a cheap 1D X from it!

As for Canon's impact by the earthquake, without looking it up I believe they're back to normal capacity. Nikon got double unlucky as they had a factory near the coast in the tsunami affected regions, and bad turned to worse when the Thai floods happened. So in terms of capability I believe Canon got off much luckier there.
