Okay, another ignorant rookie here... I'm going to buy my first "real" camera and am trying to decide which to buy. I've done a lot of reading on this forum and other places, so I'm now thoroughly confused...heheh. I have a buddy with a Coolpix P90, which piqued my interest, since I hadn't looked at cameras in a long time. I have a little point-n-shoot, but zoom is inadequate for my occasional need. As I start delving into the market, I've found sevaral I like, but I'm trying to find the best value that's right for me.

Since I'm a true novice, and will only use advanced features occsaionally, I'm looking in the 300-450.00 range. The new SX40 HS is interesting, as are some of the Coolpix models, and the Lumix. It will probably be used most for casual photos, landscapes, occasional wildlife shots, and occasional use at drag-racing is expected, so shutter speed is important for that. The 3 mentioned above look & feel nice in my hand, but I'm interested in your feedback on details I might be overlooking.

Thanks in advance for your replies.

The SX40 actually looks pretty good. It has a very long zoom range and features the DIGIC 5 processor, which I would expect to be pretty good since it's a professional processor not yet available in Canon's professional cameras.

I think both the Canon and the Lumix FZ150 could be great. Be sure to check the reviews on this site and Gordon's "compared to" conclusions where he lists the differences.
