does Sony actually make their own lenses or are they rebadged Tamron`s.

Both. Sony makes some lenses, based on technicians taken over from Minolta, in many cases based off original Minolta designs. Sony also manufactures some lenses with engineering and oversight by Zeiss, to their specifications. And in some cases, Sony has Tamron manufacture some of their lenses, altered to Sony specifications (often with tweaks to focus speed, zoom gearing, focus gearing, cover and grip design, etc).

Because of Sony's takeover of Minolta, they inherited a well respected cadre of lens engineers and lens technology to handle the bulk of their lenses in-house.

Two things are a bit surprising to me. Apparently there is a bit of a lag switching to the EVF and also when changing the aperture setting.

Meh, Digital Rev .

The delay is because you're changing from the screen to the LCD. These guys probably have it on 'auto' (the automatic switching between the EVF on the one hand and the LCD on the other hand).

I'd set to use the EVF, so there wouldn't be any delay.

Without having used it, there's unknowns here as to what transition states there are. Even in EVF only mode, I can imagine it would turn off the EV when not in use to save power, and still needs to activate on use.

Regardless of that, the setting lag remains.

I don't like the delays from the aperture change & neither the lower light "thanks" to the translucent mirror. It has amazing FPS performance (& this is the path to the future,the old tech for FPS is limited & outdated),but this doesn't go well with the lag of the aperture change,nor the lower amount light required for fast action photography.
It's a great camera,even the ISO performance is very good,but it's compromises are aqsually against the purpose itself of the camera.

I take my hat off to Sony for doing something different. The lower light is rather disappointing and I hope the lag can be resolved with a firmware update but overall I have to say I really like it.


They may be the photographic equivalent of Top Gear with Kai's antics but I think they are quite fair with their reviews and I like that they use the cameras and lenses in the real world, even if their "methods" are unconventional instead of belching out a list of dry facts that only tell so much.

Hello,
I am new to DSLR cameras and looking to pick one up. I have been doing some heavy research over the past few weeks and keep coming back to the A77. I found the excellent comparison review of the Nikon D5100 and Canon T3i on this web site and am curious about the menu of the A77. A big plus for me was the navigation and audio level control of the Canon. Does anyone know anything about the A77 menu? Is it quick to navigate and well laid out? Does it have audio level control?

Hi, bit of a noob on this site but will add my comments with regards the new a77.
My past Sony cameras have been the a200 a350 and currently the a850.
I have tried a direct comparison, handling wise, the 850 with the a77 both with my Sigma 24-70 f2.8 bells and whistles lens.
The a77 handles better in my opinion, as the 850 is one hell of a heavy camera though superb in its construction.
I compare it to an old rolls royce as opposed to the a77 being a new generation bently both superbly made though the 850 will last longer and stand more stresses and strains if you are a pro.
With regards to buffer size etc using compressed raw on the 850 you only have 9 shots before the buffer is full so the a77 is acually better in that respect! Oh I have one on order and the a850 is up for sale along with the Sigma lens £1300 the lot including remote commander and book

OK, I found a quick mention of no audio level controls in one of the videos I saw. I guess that answers that.
