My Sony comes with a RAW veiwer and developer works out of the box why dosnt nikon supply one?Which third pty developer for nikon can i use

Also Picasa (free download) handles RAW files but only saves them as JPEG

As it says on the page you need a version of the software already loaded to be able to update to these versions. The disk included with the camera will have this on it.

If you haven't got the disk for some reason you'll need to scrounge one from some one who has.

Does beg the question why you havent got the disk

Just for viewing purposes Mac OS as well as Windows both come with programs that support raw files.

In case of Windows you might have to install the camera codec pack first:

Your Nikon Camera should come with a RAW viewer and basic editor in the box, Both of mine have done so in the past. Contact the retailer or you can download them off your local Nikon website

As was said, Nikon has its own program that can be downloaded to view the files.

However, I would suggest getting Adobe Lightroom, I have Lightroom and it if by far my favorite viewing and editing software ever!

Raw Therapee runs on Windows, Mac OS and Linux.

The Nikon RAW developer that came with the camera wont work unless i go to nikon and BUY the program??

I would like at least a limited program from nikon to open and make alterations to RAW files Nikon camera are not buget.From what ive seen all other manufacturers offer a RAW development program with the purchase

Nikons are good but no longer value for money when the new modles arrive they compeat with say canon pentax now sony all of which have more featchers and RAW developer

In very many ways sony beats nikon in every way now its just a question of when the veiwfinder sony will lower its price to be competative

viewnx is the free version of capture nx. theres also a windows codec thatll let you see the raw files in photo viewer

When I had a Nikon I simply used ViewNX. As people have said, it's free and allows a decent amount of RAW processing. Very simple, pretty fast, I liked it.

To just view them, I believe Microsoft has released an optional update for Windows Explorer to be able to view RAW files
