Good plan, Mark

The main problem when I take pictures for people, especially compact camera users is because I'm carrying around a DSLR with me, they expect professional quality pictures. Obviously I'm no pro, and I don't want to disappoint them, so I generally mess around with the settings until I get the shot that I desire.

full auto is the biggest mistake I could ever do. DSLRs are not cheap compact cameras

I was once handed a blackberry at a concert, to take a picture of a couple. I couldn't figure it out for the life of me, so I took a picture with my DSLR and gave them my card.

I take pictures so quickly, my highschool was "Continuous High".

If I handed my camera to someone it would be because I wanted a quick snap of where we were. I wouldnt be expecting anything more or anything less.

If that person started changing the settings I'd given the camera with I'd be pretty miffed tbh. I'd have given them the camera with the settings I wanted it on and I'd ask them "not to mess please"

If I was handed a camera I'd show that person the same courtesy, its only polite

The post about Nikon having 2 dials, I think the front one should be shutter (more commonly used), and the rear one, the aperture. I am glad that Canon have ISO and WB (shortcut cursor) buttons, but I use the quick menu a lot now.

DSLRs aren't cheap, why use it in full auto mode (or even locked auto)? Well that really is the million dollar question. Another point is, If you have spent that much money on a camera, why stick with an inexpensive kit lens?

The comment about people wanting you to use their settings, I don't really agree with it. If they are using full auto, then they are most likely non the wiser anyway, and if you feel that you can take a better photograph with your settings, then why not? After all, it is You that is taking it, not them, and as just mentioned, if they see a DSLR, they may be expecting professional level results.

If you have experience with the said camera, or similar models, then you should be able to have it set up before they can even pose.

When in Xian China, a Chinese couple with a baby asked my wife for a photo so she put her hand out for the camera, the lady took my wife's hand to and the husband took a photo of them and then another with the baby and again with their friends. Strange but I also took some shots.
