I'm kind of new to using external flashes, so I have some questions. I recently got the Sony HVL F58AM.

- Is this flash ok to use directly with people? I see photographers with light diffusers attached to their flashes; the light is very intense otherwise.

That's what I'd have said.

They have a nice video about flash guns which shows the difference between "directly" shot at people and "using a diffuser": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wFc6v6_kka0

And they show different other stuff as well - a very useful video for beginners.

An improperly used diffuser will not make your light any softer, and you'll just be wasting flash power.
