It isn't proven there is a memory error as such. I swapped the sticks over and the error remained in the same place. It did not follow the sticks. That suggests it isn't in the sticks themselves, but maybe the timings or other motherboard issue.

On the overclock, I'm aware the turbo frequency is 3.8 GHz but that is only for a single core active. The mobo was setting 3.8 GHz even when 4 cores were active, and probably jacked up the voltage too.

I liked Asus but they kept messing around with their boards which is when I moved over Gigabyte. Other Gigabyte boards were ok, it is just this latest one whose bios I really dislike. Maybe I should go back to Asus if I build another desktop after this. I wish Abit were still around as I like them most.

my opinion: go apple:). ones you've been mac you never go back.

I really like the build quality and the performance of an apple computer. Off course you pay quite a lot for it, but I think it is worth it.

I did go mac once, and said to myself never again. It did nothing better than I could already do in windows, plus I have the extra pain of not having any useful software. Well, the hardware is ok but let down by the OS. The mac even ran windows better than OS X. In short, mac is not an option. Unless they make a radical overhaul of the interface, or microsoft really mess up future versions of windows *cough*ribbon*cough* then a change is not a viable option. And if I had to, linux would still be more desirable than OS X.

Also this is not a PC vs mac thread. If you really want one, there is an alternate one already so go there. Any further comments about macs in this thread are unwelcome and I invite mods to go as far as to delete them.

And another screen blackout event. Bob's earlier suggestion of disabling Flash acceleration was done, and I don't think there was any flash running at the time anyway. The ram is also totally different from previous times.

So that leaves three elements still in the shortlist: CPU, motherboard, GFX. As much as I hate to think it, I might get an ATI card to swap out and see if that fixes it, since it happens on two nvidia cards I've tried. At least that suggests it isn't hardware necessarily, but could be some weird driver compatibility thing.

Possibly nailed it. I didn't change gfx in the end. I observed that FF was running during the crashes I can remember, so I tried disabling CPU acceleration in there and had no issues for over two weeks. Flash GPU acceleration is on as that does make a difference in video playback quality.

Another update. Short version: it was none of the things I tried mentioned above. I finally gave in and ordered and fitted an ATI... erm, AMD HD 6850 and since then, no blank screens for over 3 weeks I can only guess the nvidia driver doesn't like something in my install. My only regret is maybe I should have got the 6870 if it is going to stay in my main system...

The 450 and 560 will get put to work crunching/heating over winter and I'll probably try to sell them on next spring.
