I own the GF1 20mm

Its the best camera Ive ever owned love it.

Now when I film in HD it runs for about 9 minutes...and cuts out is this normal?

How can i extend my filming time is there another format available?

The Problem with your GF1 stopping at 9 minutes of film might have to do with custom duties: If a photo-camera can record more than a prescribed length of film is is viewed as a cam-corder by customs which carries a higher duty. In Germany this starts at 30 minutes. In your country it may be 10 minutes.
The manual should describe the limits of continuous shooting.

Well that doesn't seem right.

So there's no way to extend the recording time?

Assuming you haven't hacked your GF1, yes, this is normal behavior when shooting video in MJPEG mode at 720p. (Technical note: it's due to FAT32's 2GB file size limit.) To record longer at HD resolution, you need to switch from MJPEG to AVCHD. However, note that AVCHD is more difficult to edit than MJPEG. (Or you can switch to a lower (non-HD) resolution in MJPEG.)

If you are not currently shooting MJPEG 720p, you might check the size and speed of your SD card, as that would be the next limiting factor.

and scroll down to the movie mode section - there you'll see a comment that in Motion JPEG mode you'll only get about 8 minutes of filming.

The answer as stated by Maestro is to use AVCHD instead.

That is no longer applicable in 2011 now that popular video editing software are designed to work with those format. (you'll need a somewhat recent computer of course)
