Hi everyone i just bought my first DSLR a few monts ago and i have been using it on Auto mostly but every time i take a photo of someone on a sunny day with a white shirt on the photo comes out over exposed, Is there anything i can do to prevent this.Thanks

My theory about why the white shirt is coming out overexposed, is because the camera meters on some of the darker colours in the background, and because the white shirt is so bright that the shutter speed that the camera chooses will expose properly the darker colours, but overexpose the bright colours like white. If you need, you could always meter on the white shirt or you could just set your exposure bias 1/3 or 2/3 of a stop underexposed.

Could you post some pictures of the overexposed images that you're getting?

Welcome to the forum CS, I agree with the above, sunny days are always going to be difficult and I'm not sure on how much -EV you would need on a cannon. Suggest you try a few shots with different exposure compensation and see what you like.

If you use Program mode, you can increase or decrease the the pin on the meter by holding in the AV button, or hovering over the meter in the Quick menu. Then move the wheel (next to shutter).

Quick menu - Q or Set button

Alternatively, you can conduct a manual exposure in Manual mode.
