i was at oulton park the other day, thirst time ive been in over a year, i took some shots, can anyone reccomend a sharp 200 or 300mm lens,

these were shot with a tamron 70-300 on a nikon d90

Most of those shots look pretty sharp to me

But I know what you mean, I think I have the same lens as you and I to feel the desire to upgrade it. There are a couple of options but it really depends on your budget:

Nikon 300mm f4 - £850
Nikon 200mm f4 - £1000
Nikon 70-200 f2.8 - £1600

I'm pretty sure they do some sharp 70-300's aswell but am not very familiar with the nikon range so will leave this to someone else.

jessops in the uk do interest free finance, so i would probably go with them, to spread the cost, did it when upgrading from d40x to d90

these pics were shot in raw then sharpened and added contrast etc in view nx to make them look better

If you are going to do interest free financing I would suggest one of the three lenses I suggested and forget the 70-300. It really depends on the focal length you want. If 200mm is going to be enough I would get the 70-200 as it is a very sharp and versatile lens. With a telephoto prime like the Nikon 200mm it is unlikely you will use it for anything other than sports and wildlife. Whereas with the 70-200 you could also use it for portraits, night photography (wide aperture) and even as a general purpose lens. This lens is expensive but definitely worth the money.

im also going to get into football photography, ive spoken to some local clubs and one so far has said i can come down and take pictures, theres loads of lower league and welsh clubs near me

General rule for buying lenses: don't spend money you don't have.

As far as the lenses go: you're panning, so you might lose more sharpness in accidental motion blur than because of your lens.

Then again, stabilisation (some of which can detect panning) might help you out with this.

So: Nikon 70-300 VR or Tamron 70-300 VC

i do have the money just not all at once, theres no interest on it so its just like saving up, im in a secure job which is salaried so its not a problem

Could you please specify your budget. I don't think you have mentioned it but correct me if I am wrong.

under £700 ideally but will go further for the right lens

just bought a sigma 70-200 f2.8 os and a monopod, ill post back some pics when it arrives.
