Yesterday, I decided to pull out the Celestron C8 and try some prime focus astrophotos of the Sun. So, I set the scope up, mounted the wide angle converter, put on the T-ring and mounted the camera.

Here's the result...

Image
f/10
1/400
ISO 800

I tried focusing with live view on the sunspot (which you can see around the 2:00 position) but it still didn't come out how I wanted it to.
Does anybody have any tips on focusing, or how to get the "perfect" sun photo?

Thanks,
-Evan

A pretty good attempt there.

Ive been dabbling with this myself lately (see my blog - link in sig) What filter did you use on your scope?

For focussing, I cant really help. I find it really difficult to focus as we are effectively looking at a featureless object and often sunspots are too small to use as a reference.

Does your camera have live view? Maybe that can be used to help?

What I tend to do is put a towel over my head, focus as best as possible, using the edge of the sun as a reference. Then I will fire off some shots and tweak the focus either side of where it was. Hopefully there will be a shot or two in focus.

Another option maybe if you can tether your camera, then you can review your shots on screen and assess focus.
