Hi folks,

Mozilla has released Firefox 5. Yes, a major version number change which will consequently break a number of Add-Ons.

In the absence, so far as I'm aware, of an automated Add-On version checker which can be used prior to updating the next best thing is Mozilla's Add-On Compatibility Report.

Firefox 5 breaks two of my most used Add-Ons and the Report doesn't even deign to mention Symantec's two Add-Ons which get installed as part of the Norton ISS.

Did Mozilla really have to cause so much grief. If it weren't for the Add-Ons I'd be actively looking for another browser right now and if Mozilla keep denying me use of those Add-Ons in order to get security fixes (WebGL is probably the most notable fix in v5) then maybe it's time to dump Firefox altogether and find a browser that actually understands and correctly applies ICC colour profiles!

I only just gave in and put FF4 on my main box the other week as I prefer the interface of 3.5! So far FF5 looking pretty identical to 4. It did break one plugin for me, but it is one I use so rarely I don't miss it.

Symantec addons are broken when they are shipped, that's not Mozilla's fault

But I'll upgrade in a couple of weeks I think.

I just updated from IE6 to FF3.6 and got it to look like the IE6 - I'm just used to it - why should I change? OK - the IE6 got really slow at the end but the FF3.6 should be new enough to work some more time

I don't like the look of IE7+ and FF4+

To be fair the version information for my Add-Ons was quickly updated by Mozilla and I was able to install FF5 (Firefox 5) as my essential ones are all compatible. TinEye still works, despite not being flagged as FF5 capable, as do my Symantec add-ons so that's a bonus. Still no colour management fix so that remains disabled but at least I benefit from the security fixes. I've even taken a chance and re-enabled WebGL

As for look and feel, I was dubious when FF4 first came out but there's no way I'd go back to FF3 now and, for me, IE fails on the way RSS feeds are exposed despite some UI improvements over the years. Thankfully FF5 retains the look and feel of FF4.

I did read somewhere that Firefox will be released as 4 updates per year from now on to mirror the Chrome release schedule so no 5.5 just straight to 6 and expect another one a 4 months after that..

Some Adobe plug-ins / extensions from CS5.5 were not compatible, but I didn't use them anyway...
