I've found the 70-300mm VR lens from Nikon to be an excellent all round telephoto zoom lens. As you can see I've mainly used it for wildlife shots and mainly at the 300mm end where the VR really comes into its own. The whale shots were taken in a 2m swell and really came out well. The only problem was I made myself seasick taken the photos :) The only thing I'd change in the lens is to make it faster at the 300mm end. Of course that would add significantly to the cost of the lens. All photo were taken with my D80 using NEF and post processed using Lightroom.

Looks like I might have to add some shots of my own when I get my one.
Really digging the 3rd one down. I'm just waiting for the speech bubble with 'mine' to pop out of its head (there's a funny sea gull in the film finding Nemo in case you havent seen the film).

It was a tad bigger than a sea gull.

Man: I haven't got choc-ices. I only got the albatross. Albatross!

Customer: What flavour is it?

Man: It's a bird, innit. It's a bloody sea bird . .. it's not any bloody flavour. Albatross!

Well the first shot was taken from about ten metres away so not that far away, and the second shot was taken from about 3 metres away. I suppose I could have shot the second one using my 18-70, but since I already had the 70-300 on, I thought why not.
