Hello all,

Just got my fabulous EF-S 15-85mm lens from Canon, but Canon has gone off their trolleys so to speak if they think I'm paying $50 for their special, sprinkled with magical fairy dust hood. Looks like one can get an off-brand 72mm hood for around $5. Was just wondering if there is any certain brand of such hoods that is preferred, or if I just take my pick. Or perhaps more importantly, are there any construction-related features I should look for? Here is basically what's available, if anyone has any recommendations:

I've never picked out a hood before, it's always been supplied. This is the one qualm I have about Canon, they make superior products and they know it. And they're going to milk it for all it's worth by making people think that their plastic accessories are as valuable as their glass. In reality I don't buy the fact that there's any connection.

I went and got the Canon hood for the 15-85. Because it is such a wide angle lens, the hood is almost useless for shade. With hindsight I wouldn't have bothered with a hood at all. If you just want a hood for protection, I think anything goes as long as it fits correctly.

I recently bought a hood for my Canon 50mm f/1.4 of ebay. Cost 3USD with freight. I just chose a random supplier with good feedback.
It's not a perfect fit, but for a lens hood it's more than good enough.
I agree though, Canon's lens hood prices are straight out insane.

I got a 72mm hood from Zeikos, but it causes severe vignetting. It's obviously from the shadow and when I take the hood off it goes away. I don't get it, it looks exactly like the one from Canon. Could the screw on the bottom perhaps be adding too much length to it?

You need (OK, should) to get the hood that was designed exactly for that lens for the most benefit.

You've probably picked up a hood that was designed for the 17-85, and putting that on your 15-85 will obviously vignette at the wide end.
