Hi all!

Very new to DSLR - just received my first camera.

Wondering best range for the following shots
Photos of newborn bub - portrait style?
Photos of sport - netball court range?

This would be on a 550D

Hi Shelby,

To be honest if you are new to DSLRs then the 18-55mm that probably came with your camera will be fine for both those applications.

However if you do want to upgrade your gear, Id personally recommend something like a 50mm f1.8 for baby portraits, and a 55-200 or similar for netball, both of which dont cost a fortune.

I completely agree with jeremy, although if you have the budget, a 70-300 IS might be a bit nicer for the netball closeups.

Thanks so much for these tips. As luck would have it I bought the camera with the twin kit 18-55 and 55-250 also got the 50mm f/1.8 thrown in so sounds like I am well covered. Just a little worried about the changing of lenses. Was thinking maybe a 18-270 or 18-200 but have heard that the kit lenses are usually better?

Thanks again any more advise is greatly appreciated. (thought if a lens was better could sell some of the lenses I have and buy a walk around maybe)?

Hi shellby I wouldn't recommend a 18-270 or 18-200 as the image quality is nowhere near as good. If I were you I would keep those three lenses and use them. You don't always have to switch lenses either if you know what you are about to take photos of you can put that lens on before you go out and there will be no need to change

Maybe I should look at using my current lenses and then upgrading later.

Was thinking of the new Tamron 18-270 PZD but is not the cheapest of lenses. I think my main problem is knowing which lens I will need out of the 3 I have if I was to take one which would be the best option to cover any situation? Any info is greatly appreciated....
