My friend is looking to buy a DSLR with single lens kit (18-55mm) for any price upto the £500 mark.

All comments welcome.

If he is looking to take photography seriously:

Nikon: Used Nikon D80 with used Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 EX DC Macro

Canon: Used EOS 30D with used Tamron SP 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di-II VC

If he's just doing it to get some holiday/family snaps then just get the newest entry level camera with kit lens (D3100 or 600D)

There are quite a few cameras under the £500 price mark though, and there are of course more manafactures around besides Canon and Nikon.

He was looking at the D5000 originally, but I suggested asking, incase there were better options available.

He'd look at used cameras! Used 450Ds are almost for free, get the twin lens kit and go.

It would really be up to your friend to decide which option is best.

Off the top of my head, these are the DSLRs you can get new for <£500 with a kit lens.

Canon EOS 1000D
Canon EOS 1100D
Nikon D3100
Nikon D5000
Pentax K-r
Pentax K-x
Sony a33
Sony a390

The best advice you can give your friend is to go to a photography or CE store and hold the camera in his hands. Any self-respecting store of this sort should either have demo models out or let you try the camera out if they hope to secure a sale.

There are, however I dont recommend beginners (which I assume your friend is?) to buy outside of the CaNikon systems for various reasons. Mainly customer service, also, information available, lens and accessory selection, renting lenses, borrowing lenses for testing etc etc.

Hi Jeremy,

I think one link to MPB in a day is fine but your previous post brought that up to five. I've removed the links and replaced them with descriptive text. In general it is preferred in these circumstances to link to the manufacturer's product pages. Thanks for your understanding.

Bob.

If I were your friend, I'd spend a little more (£ 59) and get the A580 ;). At the moment, it costs £ 559 at Warehouse Express :).

Faster continuous shooting (5 fps), a huge buffer, 7 fps (albeit with the autofocus and exposure locked), Sweep Panorama, Handheld Twilight Mode, Anti-Blur Mode, Auto HDR, wireless flash capability, way better battery life, doesn't necessarily need a card reader (because of its 'mass storage option' giving high transfer speeds), great dynamic range, superb high ISO performance,...

I will pass the information on.

Lenses that require IS have it built in anyway, so this isn't neccesarily an advantage.

I don't think he wants to spend loads on it though, and this is a first DSLR.
