Hi folks,

Got your attention? :P

OK, it seems that Sony have actually ceased production of the NEX-3. This doesn't mean that NEX-3 cameras will disappear from the shelves as stock levels are unknown by probably everyone except the worthies at Sony itself. It also doesn't mean that when the NEX-3 stocks finally dry up the NEX-5 will be the only NEX model in the line-up. (source).

So far so certain. What the next NEX will looks like hasn't been revealed but Photo Rumors seems to believe that from the front it will look like the Konica-Minolta Dimage A2. Of course the body of the new camera would have to have much less depth to support the NEX lens system and the A2 dimensions would imply the new NEX would be much taller. Not sure that fits in with the NEX stylee but if the new model supports a setting dial or two that might certainly broaden the appeal away from compact upgraders - compact cameras, not compact people!
Bob.

Yes, before I click the link, I was wondering...

did you treat rumour as bible or official statements
OR
you have insider connection.

Hi Anthony,

If you follow the source links I gave it seems that the demise of the NEX-3 and the launch of a new NEX are out of the "rumour" category. What the new model will look like is definitely rumour.

And no, I don't have any inside links. Frankly, anyone who claims they do and publishes information likely to be embargoed by an NDA is likely to be being mischievous.

I knew about the NEX3 being ceased...in fact, it's the very reason I just got one 2 weeks ago! When the prices dropped way down, it suddenly became too tempting - I couldn't think of why NOT to pick one up as a second body to keep handy.

Still love my NEX-5 :). Wish they'd release the lenses they announced during last year's Photokina...instead of making yet another camera.

Indeed, the lack of lenses for the NEX has me hesitating to buy one, though ironically, the ability of the NEX to use other brands of lenses, with adapters, is what caused me to pay attention to the NEX in the first place. Manual focus is OK some of the time, but I would also like to see some better glass specifically made for the NEX system.

Lots of NEX news on the horizon...

http://www.sonyalpharumors.com/

There will be a 55-200mm and also a 24mm Zeiss, not to mention a new NEX-C3 and probably a PRO model the NEX-7

I just hope they're going to release the E-mount 50mm as well as a couple of the other lenses. The flash shown on SAR does look a lot like the external flash shown at last year's Photokina in Cologne...

No shortage of 50mm lenses for the NEX, with the Zeiss probably being the best of the lot.

But I agree an actual E-mount, G standard would be nice. Also a NEX-7 with a viewfinder for me.
:)

* not sure it was necessary to go smaller on the body of the new model thought.

A NEX-7 with a viewfinder would certainly get my attention! :)

I've been told that new firmware for the current generation of NEX cameras is just around the corner :).

Sony might do the same as they did with the A700 and the A900: update the firmware of the former around the release of the latter...because it could use a very similar firmware/UI/...

It has already been released, for the sake of clarity.

Hi Joris,

'Thanks for that. I'm always interested when posts such as the one you just answered appear in a long dormant thread. I'll be keeping a watchful eye open and I hope my suspicions prove unfounded!

Bob.

I can't be any happer getting those old great canon prime lenses off the retired camera shelf. The focus is no problem at all on the 5N, just tuch the screen and the subject is in your face fore really great sharp focus. I thought the Canon FLs 1.2, 1.4s and long lenses were retired foever. The NEX works great with them. I also bought an adaptor( not received yet) for my fast Konica lens, but can't wait to try them: Larry
