Good spot. And it compares very nicely with the Adorama price of $1200 after the exchange rate and 20% VAT have been factored in so kudos to Fuji for being fair to those of us in Europe. Maybe there's hope for a sub £800 price tag after all once the initial rush has died down! 8)

Hi folks,

I finally got to spend some time with the X100 today. Not enough for even a preview length article but it was enough to convince me that the camera isn't for me. Don't get me wrong, there's a lot to like about it, particularly the way the hybrid viewfinder works when in optical mode with the information clearly, if a little too brightly for my taste, overlayed. But switching to full EVF mode was a major disappointment, maybe because of the instant comparison between optical and electronic display. In EVF mode, for me personally, any sense of immediate connection between the scene and the eye was completely lost. I really had thought that EVFs would have moved on but I'm not convinced at all. Manual focussing through the viewfinder was also an unsatisfactory process, partly because of the EVF but also because the focus ring seems to require a large number of twists to get any significant effect. Maybe that can be changed but without access to a manual I've no way of checking. But even in optical mode I found that the 0.5x magnification gave real problems if composing with the right eye and keeping the left eye open. Maybe that's just down to my not being used to that style of shooting but I can't help thinking that a higher magnification would have reduced the disconnect between the eyeball versus viewfinder scenes.

I did have a rummage though the menus of the X100 to see what is and is not user configurable but that leads me on to another personal pet hate and that is a menu system which seems to be more bling than substance at the initial levels. Maybe I'm just too used to Canon's tabbed icon approach where, at the first press of the Menu button, one has immediate display of most, if not all, of the configurable settings for the last selected tab and it's very easy to move between tabs. In fairness to Fuji their menu structure seems broadly in line with a number of models out there so many may actually prefer it but not me, I'm afraid.

So, while I applaud what Fuji has done and readily concede that many will love it I'll offer that if you have the slightest doubt about whether or not the X100 is for you then get down to a store and check it out. The menu structure I could probably learn to live with but my experience with manual focus and the viewfinder in full EVF mode are deal breakers for this particular potential customer. :(

Bob.

Kai from DigitalRev has a nice little video up on Youtube:

Definitely made me interested, that hybrid viewfinder looks promising.

Interesting. His comment about the pure EVF mode of "Yeah, it's alright" very much echoes my own experience only I didn't feel so generous. Maybe I should have spent more time with it than the 15 minutes I did manage at the FOI show as the camera had everything but the kitchen sink showing very brightly in the viewfinder. No access to a manual so I never found out how to get rid of the baggage in the time available and I much prefer the setup in that video to what I saw through the viewfinder. Maybe I'll have another look at it when Fuji modifies the firmware after early adopter feedback is in... ;) 8)

Not until just now - I think most Japanese camera companies have been affected to some extent even if just by the effects of the rolling power outages. Trivial in the wider context of what's happening, of course, and it may be a few months before some production reverts to normal levels. Maybe longer if the tooling has been destroyed or, far worse, key personnel have lost their lives so delaying any possible switch in production to other facilities.

For those interested, production restarted about a week and a half ago and it is expected to be available mid-end april.
So not a big delay. Got to commend Fuji for their efforts.

Hi folks,

The Leica News & Rumors site has published a pretty detailed side by side of the X100 with the Leica X1 which you can read here.

X1 owners may be a little disgruntled to find that the reviewer, who also owns an M9, prefers the X100. 8)

I disagree, although you lose many features with the X1 that costs 1000$ more, you do get a red dot that says Leica on it, and how much fun is that packaging to open?

Hi Evan,

Might I interest you in a job lot of red dots? I'll include a complementary tube of glue and I'm prepared to let you have ten for half the price of an X1. :P

Even, you sound like you should be shooting Canon, and mumbling about how many L lenses you have :P
