The comments are possibly more interesting than the main article itself.

Despite much encouragement from friends and family to become a photography student, I decided to take on a IT study and focus on my photography work in my spare time. I've made the right decision, as my photography business failed and my current gear-to-payout balance is about -3,4K

So yes, I would wholeheartedly agree the older businessmodel is dying. Newspapers and other news instances won't pay for pictures (at least not the ones accesible to a starter), and pretty much every other event business will not pay either, claiming that "the opportunity and portfolio shots" are payment enough...

..and people fall for it.

My portfolio is saturated. Practically no-one pays for a photographer anymore. I'm glad I still have my IT study.

I'll still continue photography as a hobby, still take pictures for my local music stage, but mostly because I enjoy it, not to make money.

Perhaps I'll consider a job if it's offered to me, but for now I'll focus on my study, and perhaps take on a job in a camera store. Not with hopes to score a photography job, but to earn some F--- money for a change.....

I wish I can find it again, there was a What The Duck in the past which went along the lines of:

Photographer Duck 1: My child has a photo assignment at school, so fortunately I have all the kit already. But what do other parents do?

Duck 2: They have real jobs so they can afford to get it.

I see that he doesn't mention "wedding photography" in his article at all?

Methinks there's still plenty of demand for that
