i'm considering buying the d7000 with the 18-105 lens and also the 85mm 1:3.5 macro. before i invest this much money i want to see if anyone is having any problems with the camera. i heard there might be hot pixel problems and/or focus might not be so good, especially with the 18-105 lens.

The hot pixel issue is one that is a non-issue in normal use, especially after the latest Firmware update.

There are plenty owners already of the D7000 on this forum, and you could read up on the D7000 thread in the Nikon section (where we already are now) which is already 32 pages big.

Mine's doing really well - an impressive camera. No hot pixel or focus issues.

Only (minor) issue is that the camera seems to create a new folder number each time I switch to the "U" (User) settings. However, the file numbering remains continuous, so there's little effect.

I've found the camera predictable and consistent with exposure, and a step up on the D90 for jpeg colour balance. Very sharp too, good with high ISO and a truly excellent control set-up.

Sharpness does not have much to do with the camera body, but rather, lens?

The more pixels, the more details in theory you can capture Also, noise reduction can reduce sharpness quite a bit.

Yes - I've done comparisons between my D90 and D7000 and the D7000 definitely brings out more detail with the same lens.

But that is at 100% on screen - both are most satisfactory.

When shooting raw at all times is there much between the IQ of the D7000 and D90? pondering on saving up the extra I'd need after selling the D90

IQ at what size? At small prints (A4) you will not see much difference in the lower ISO's I guess. Maybe better Dynamic Range and Color reproduction at 14 bits, but thats the thing I cant answer for you.

Much better noise handling? I have a couple of family weddings up coming and will be printing album shots , but only 10 x 8" size and I know the d90 is well capable of producing great shots much larger than that. I suppose the higher iso noise handling and better metering would be the main features I'd be looking at.

But shooting RAW, noise shouldnt be an issue, the only thing you could gain is less work in post processing but with RAW you can probably do a better noise handling job in post processing than the camera would.

of course it is! You still get noise on RAW files, it's the same image, just not processed by the camera itself.

On my D200 anything above ISO 400 would be a mess of noise, on the RAW image, and was a nightmare to try clean up. You lose a lot of detail trying to smoothen it over. The D90 is much more capable, I've had very usable image straight off cam up to ISO 1600. But in very dark condition you will still get noise. I heard the D7000 handles it a lot better from 1600 upward.

I'm having hot pixels issue ONLY when i shoot long exposures in low light(night landscapes) or shooting macro (long exposures as well). Otherwise the camera is perfect!
I would reconsider the kit lens though - better get 18-200mm, 28-300mm combination of 2-3 lenses, which will cover the entire range.

@ Cagey75: but I compared D90 to D7000, and these have not that big difference in noise handling as say D80/D200 and D7000.

@ whitenebula: 3 lens solution 16-85 ; 70-300 and a low-light capable prime is of better use in my eyes than a 18-200 ; 28-300 solution. Unless you mind switching lenses (but you will get used to that).

The D90 isn't bad at noise handling to begin with. I've tried it at 3200 and you can get very usable results.

Shooting RAW doesn't help with noise issues though. I shot RAW on my old D200 and it was a disaster beyond ISO 400.

RAW has very little to do with it, as noise reduction is "another parameter" in the package you can decide to change later without loss of quality compared to JPEG where all is already cooked in the file. And as technology advances, the differences will be smaller.
