Quick tip:

if you want to get nice "star" effect from light points, close the aperture to say around f11 - f16.

Overall, the subject is not that interesting, I bet there are more interesting things in your area you can show us. But you managed to get the shot sharp, so it's ok to go further :]

Carloz, good tip, I never realised it was the Ap that did that. I could never figure out why some of my night pics had those big burst coming from the lights and I always put it down to the lens.

This pic was at F11 exactly as you say.

By the way, I second what Carloz says. You can definitely get a nice night shot now you just need a more interesting subject.

Using the lens hood, as well as taking off any UV filters, may help reduce flare as in the second photo.

If there is a street light just out of frame but in front of the lens and you're using a tripod, then using a free hand to create an extension to the lens hood may help some more...
