DSLRs have UV filters built into them, so the only real reason is to stop you getting scratches or dirt on your lens. After all, it's a lot cheaper to replace a UV filter than a whole lens. Try to get a multicoated one however, or you may get lens flare in your pictures.

So would you say the cheapest Tiffen of Hoya Multicoated UV filter should be good enough for a beginner? I see that the coatings are what seem to add to the price. Any suggestions for which one?

Remember that even a top-end filter will have some impact on ultimate image quality - any extra element will - BUT this is the accpetable compromise for the protection for most people.

well, the advantages of having one is very helpfull, when taking say pictures of a reflection on water and its too bright you can use a polarising filter, using a UV filter is good for low light or if you want very nice bright primary colours etc i would recomend buying one or two will help you out in alot of sticky situations
