Hey. I was wondering about the Canon 7D and flash usage. From what i can read, the 7D can work as a master flash. My question is though, i got the Canon 430EX II, would that work? And would I need some sort of extra gear, like a remote transmitter for the 430 or how? Hope you can help me out.

It should work without the need of additional equipment other than the 7D and 430EXII. This is based on Canon's flash based signalling system. Before, you would need a dedicated transmitter but the body flash can serve that function now.

But doesn't the 430EX II need a reciever of some sort? Or is that built in? Sorry for my ignorance, but I'm pretty clueless when it comes to flash stuff...

I don't have one myself but if it is like other similar systems there is an IR detector in the flash itself, which picks up flash pulses sent by the body in code to tell the flash what to do.

Hmm... there must be a better place to read up on this... aah, here is Canon describing the system themselves.

does this work with a 550d? Was about to get flash triggers to use the flash wirelessly but this would save me money.

I think the 7D is the first camera they put the system in. Others will still need some kind of controller.

it works on the 7D, its pretty straight forward. Just need to turn on the wireless in the menu. Set if you want built in and flashlight or just flashlight. Then push zoom button on flash until it goes into slave mode. By default they should be on channel 1.
That`s it, for any other stuff you need to study manual.

To use this system, the 7D flash has to be up.

Is there any way of turning it off though and just using the external flash(es)?

there is a setting in the menu under build in flash - then wireless function where you turn off the built in flash, while leaving external active

Yes, I recently saw a video on it.

The built in flash still flashes, however, it does so before the main flash.
