Hello!

I'm sorry if my topic title is a little confusing but let me explain;

As of now, I have been maintaining my external drives manually. My problem is, that's a very tedious process as I have multiple hard drives are clones of each other. It's alright when i just dump data into them, but sometimes i'll do major rearrangement to the structure of the data as i see fits. Whenever that happens i'll format all the other drives and copy paste the new structure onto them.

Which you can guess, is a very time consuming process. I am wondering if there's any program out there that could identify the master external hard drive, and apply changes to any other slave external automatically when i plug them in?

I am aware of products such as drobo s and so forth, but all my externals are 2.5" hard drives with non-removable enclosure.

I do not store my data on my computer's hard drive(a notebook, its my main), and I'm using windows 7

I guess I use a similar arrangement. I use external HDs in pairs, to have a master copy and a 2nd copy of data. To sync between them, I use Syncback freeware version. It's a configurable file sync/copy/backup software so I use it to add/remove files from the 2nd drive to match the first. I'm not sure if it has a "sync on connection" option though but at worst you just have to hit go manually when you connect the drives.

Other alternatives are Synctoy from Microsoft - I use Second Copy which is perhaps more flexible but not free.

Thanks for all the suggestion thus far!

I've installed sync toy and played with syncback for a while!

Sadly unless i'm missing something, syncback doesnt seem to be able to detect directory changes (only) (which i make quite often, since i'm new to this organized backup thing) but instead telling me that what files and where they are missing.

As popo have mentioned, i will have to make the changes manually and use them as a reference. That definitely helps, instead of me remembering all the changes that i have made.

However, just, if they can be automated .

I'll look into sync toy and the super flexible file synchronizer... boy that's a long name tomorrow .

Thanks again for all the suggestions, appreciate them Other suggestions are still welcome! I don't mind paying but again they should be reasonable priced (Well this is sort of subjective... i guess under 100 dollar?).

I haven't dug deep, so I don't know if syncback is smart enough to detect moves as opposed to simple present or not changes.
