As the subject line implies, I'm wondering how I might get a good portrait of somebody in front of a lit Christmas tree with good lighting on the subject but still be able to see the lights on the tree. I think using the flash would overexpose the needles of the tree and drown out the lights. Thanks for any suggestions.

I would have thought exposing for the tree and lights, and then using rear curtain flash for the subject...? i.e. dragging the shutter

Either dragging the shutter, or shooting at a high ISO with the flash all the way turned down and shot through a sheet of aper/tablecloth.

Use the slow sync mode or "night photo" mode on your camera to enable capturing the tree lights and the foreground people.

Flash on, long shutter speed. That should work well.
