Haven't tried it yet, but I'm pretty sure that I can overpower the sun by one or two stop with a regular speedlight. Of course this would involve putting the speelight relatively close and without any light modifier. Will definitely try this tomorrow

If you are using an E-TTL flash all you need to do is slow shutter until the ambient is filled...

As mentioned before, simply exposing for the ambient then adding E-TTL flash will do the trick.

I feel like we're getting a little more complicated than need be.

Also bouncing your flash, rather than shooting your subjects in the face will even out your light much better.

Wow - the bottom on page 1 before we got onto TTL or Manual for flash!
