    .......................Tree on Fire

    Image

    • Camera Model: Canon EOS 5D Mark II
    • Lens: EF24-105mm f/4L IS USM
    • Image Date: 2010:11:23 23:50:20
    • Focal Length: 28.0mm
    • Aperture: f/5.6
    • Exposure Time: 84.000 s
    • ISO equiv: 800

Sodium street lighting is hateful to an aspiring astrophotographer but this time I made use of it. There was a road a few hundred yards behind the camera and the lights cast their pall (if palls can be light :?) on the tree. That allowed me to selectively mask for that colour and after a few manipulations with the mask then to change the hue and saturation to the red you see above from the normal sickly yellow. A few more tweaks to enhance the contrast of the whole scene produced the desired result. Oh, and in case you think this wasn't taken at night, courtesy of a fairly bright moon, you can see a few star trails if you look carefully enough. 8)

Bob.

Taken Nov 26, 2010 while on vacation for Thanksgiving:

Image

Camera: Canon XTi/400D
Exposure: 91 seconds
Aperture: f/16
Lens: 50mm f 1.4
Post processing: none, I tried a couple color adjustments and like the original best

After my grand idea of boats at a dock turned out very blurry, I settled on this one from the Marin Headlands looking out over the San Francisco Bay's Golden Gate Bridge.

Something Different

Image

Camera = NIKON D40X
Lens 18-200mm
Focal Length = 18mm
Exposure Time = 30"
F Number = F3.5
ISO Speed Ratings = 1600
Exposure Bias Value = +4.33EV
PP: Slight crop and balance

This is one of my test shots and unfortunately we had cloud every night after that, I wanted to include the stars for a longer exposure, (my PP skills are lacking)

Cheers

Even though:

1. thestig2010's early submission is a shoe in for the November challenge,

2. Victor Hoffmann, Capital and Trevor Harris (for fantastic pp) are well up there too,

3. Composition is not what I'd like and it's not been well received in the forum thread I posted,

I thought I'd put a late submission in.

I revisited a site I'd been to earlier in the month to try to capture some star trails. It's difficult in Dubai as there is a lot of light pollution to the North from Dubai itself, Sharjah, Ajman and a couple of other cities, so I had to travel further afield to Fujairah on the East Coast. Doubly useful was the fact that there was less air traffic across the scene. Ideally I would have gone in the evening before sunset to set a stronger composition and capture longer trails, but I got up very early to drive to the site and allowed for 1 1/2 hours shooting. I didn't allow for forgetting my remote shutter release in the car which lost another 30 minutes climbing down the mountain to my car and returning to the camera - D'OH!

Camera = NIKON D90
Lens = Sigma 10-20mm
Focal Length = 10mm
Exposure Time = 30" x 60
F Number = F5.6
ISO Speed Ratings = 400
Exposure Bias Value = N/A
PP: 60 shots stacked and then distortion corrected as much as possible (trying to compose in darkness was a pain, and a minor failure!), curves, contrast and saturation adjustments in PS, 2 aircraft light streaks cloned out

Definitely a work in progress and I'm detirmined to get back to the site to get longer trails and better composition on a moonless night soon.

Not a superb image, but it's decent I guess.

I was lying in bed, and decided to take this picture out my window.

This was a stack of about a dozen images. The following data is for each image:

Canon Rebel XS/1000D
Canon EF 50mm f1.8 II
ISO: 800
Exposure: 10.0 sec
Aperture: 1.8

This is my first attempt at astrophotography, so I'll admit I didn't really know how to combine these images. In the end, I manually aligned them in GIMP, and set the layer modes to "multiply". (I tried "addition" as well, but found that this amplified rather than eliminated some light pollution in the images.)
