tried out my new d90 and tamron 70-300mm today at oulton park. ive never done any panning before so decided to give it a try.

Now that's some serious panning ! Congratulations, I wouldn't even dare trying.

Now some comments...technique-wise...

First, I'd suggest using a lower (sensitivity) - ISO 100. As you seem to have been shooting in S (Tv for any Canon Eos users reading...shutter speed priority), this will give you a larger aperture, less noise in your pictures than shooting at f/25 and ISO 800...and sharper pictures obviously. Well, at the long end of a telephoto zoom lens pretty much every lens out there (except for the Nikkor 200-400 f/4 VR II monster) will benefit from stopping down a bit, but if the aperture gets too small you'll get diffraction (this is related to the lens as well as the pixel density of your sensor). Try avoiding apertures below f/11. That said, I have a perfectly usable picture taken at f/13 or f/14 and 230mm (Sony 70-400G SSM), so go try with your Tamron and find out what works for you .

Secondly, I see the motorcycle is sharp, but the driver's head isn't. Picking a faster shutter speed helps but may obviously not give you the blurred background you're after. It's a bit of trial and error, I guess. I'm not exactly in this kind of photography, sadly.

Finally, I would like to give you a tip . If you'd be shooting them head-on, pick a faster shutter speed. Someone has explained it to me some time ago - it has to do with physics...some parts (like the front of a car or motorcycle) are moving faster than the other, it appears. Something with the aspect or so. I hope Gordon reads this...he's got a degree in Physics from the University of Kent so he ought to know how this exactly works.

thanks evolution, i took about 1000 pics today because i was using 4fps burst mode. just looking through the shots ive got.

if anyone else goes to oulton park, go to knickerbrook, its a slower corner so makes panning a bit easier. tried it on a straight but the bikes were doing 200mph so it didnt turn out too well there

how much of a difference would a vr lens make to panning shots, ive got one but its only 18-55mm, i was thinking of saving up for the 300mm version

im not entirely new (still a noob tho), bought a d40x a few years ago but havnt really done any in the last year due to work commitments,

i was trying out my tamron 70-300 only cost me £100, some pretty good results, got jealous though at the lenses the pros there had, one of them is worth nearly the same as my car

tip for people wanting to do panning, shoot in raw, i shot in raw + jpeg and the processed raws look better than the jpegs. i also messed up in the beginning and had white balance set to florescent so everything was blue, it was easy to change it on the raw files.

The problem for action/sports/aviation/... photography with Nikon, glass-wise that is, is their lack of a professional (but still 'affordable' - I mean, less than € 2000) 300/400mm zoom lens. At the moment they have:

- the AF-S 70-300mm ED IF VR (pretty good lens but needs to be stopped down once you get to 200-250-300mm),
- the AF 80-400 VR: lacks a fast SWM autofocusing motor and is optically not brilliant,
- the AF-S 200-400 f/4 VR II, a professional lens with a very high price tag (and incredibly heavy as well!).

What Nikon should develop is something like Canon's new 70-300L or Sony's 70-300G SSM, in addition to, say, a new 80-400 or 70-400G SSM like Sony has .

Yeah that’s me, the bike doesn't belong to me though, it's a amazing bike and goes well for a 45year old!
