Finally moving up to a DSLR, now trying to figure out how to carry it.

Looking at holster bags for a pentax k-x, with a 28-300 lens.
Not much available around here in stores, so shopping on the net.

Some bags have movable inserts to allow internal custom fitting, but many I can't tell.

It seems like with this style of bag, the weight of the camera and lens all must rest on the lens, unless the inserts can be moved to support the weight by the body?

Is this really OK and not damaging ?

I'm a hiker, so I'm concerned that if the weight is really on the lens
the shock/vibration of hiking will be bad ....

Anyone using a holster for active outdoor photography and happy with the protection it provides?

Cams are pretty tough. If you mean a top loader bag, mine actually suspends the camera by the sides, only the my 70-200 hits the bottom of the bag.

Yes, looking at top loaders, narrowed down to
- Tamron 515 Compact Zoom Pak
and
- Lowepro Toploader Zoom 55 AW

Unfortunately something else has come up, going to have to put the purchase on hold for a while

Also consider Lowepro's Toploader Pro AW series. My cousin used one for his holiday in Africa (three and a half weeks, for his D90, 16-85 and 70-300, plus a spare battery etc) and absolutely loves it .

I did look at that one, but it is described as "designed to carry and protect a Pro digital DSLR camera with grip".

I just want to carry a Pentax k-x which is a pretty small camera among DSLRs.
So wouldn't the Pro series bags be kind of big?

Quite frankly, I haven't been able to try one so I don't know. I should really ask my cousin to take it with him when he drops by.

I also consider getting one for when I want to take just my A350 (to be replaced with something A700-ish and a grip) and my 70-400. Currently, this combination is about 28-29 centimeters long if I remember correctly. The largest model is just large enough to fit it...and I'm not even using a professional DSLR nor grip .

I'd suggest you go and have a look in a local store where they have them...or you could just see what gear you want to fit in it and see how long it is, prior to looking at dimensions on Lowepro's website.

Just remember you'd better have some space left - if gear fits really too tight in a bag, it may affect the zippers.
