Unnatural End

Image
UnnaturalEnd by mirageII, on Flickr

This is a picture of my window after a ring necked dove flew into it at top speed. Unfortunately the bird died but it left a lasting impression with me (and the window).

If you look closely you can see the beak, eyes and all the feather detail in the chest.

EOS 400D/XTi
EF 24-105mm @ 65mm with 500D Close up lens
f/4 @ 1/1000th ISO 400

Postprocessing: crop, and slight unsharp mask

I was invited to photograph some Pelote Basque matches. This is the bare hands game (although they do have band aids around the fingers, I can tell you that hitting the ball REALLY REALLY hurts), which is the slowest yet most physical in terms of running about.

You obviously don't see it live, but after looking at the pictures we couldn't get over how much this guy bent his arm backward. Even he was surprised !!

Camera Model: D90
Lens and focal length: Sigma 70-300mm, think that they're all 70mm.
Aperture: f/4
Shutter Speed: 1/400
Sensitivity: ISO 1250
Post processing: RAW in Aperture, Uploaded as jpeg to SmugMug

[moderator edit: This is the On Assignment thread - only one image is allowed in this month's Assignment. You have posted three - please re-post only one. LahLahSr]

[Super-moderator edit: Bob let me know I screwed up with this one (thanks Bob) - you CAN submit three images just as you did mattyb - I apologize to you and anyone else looking and rolling their eyes - this month's assignment allows 3 entries. Please re-post them all. LahLahSr]

To see larger images and the originals, replace the S by M or L or O in the link.

Cha-Ching!
Image

I cut a dollar symbol into a large piece of cardboard and covered my softbox it that to create an "Unnatural Catchlight" in the eyes.

Camera: 40D
Lens: Canon 70-200mm 2.8 IS @ 200mm
Aperture: f8
Shutter: 1/200th
ISO: 400
PP: small adjustments made to bring out colors. (The $ is NOT photoshopped!)

A craftsman at work gearing up fo a big festivity in Bengal - India.
The whole situation looks unnatural... the man almost getting bitten by the clay lion, the demon trying to smack on his head from behind and he unperturbedly working on the Elephant God - Ganesha.

Image

Exposure - 1/50
Aperture - f/3.4
70 mm at 35mm equiv.

Boulders at Moereki Beach

Image

Moereki on the East coast of New Zealand's South Island is famous for the large, spherical boulders on its beach. These look quite other-worldly, like giant alien eggs, so when passing through this weekend, I thought them a perfect subject for this month's assignment!

Panasonic Lumix LX5, JPEG from camera, no PP
Aperture Priority, f5, 1/2000, 80 ISO, 24mm equivalent

PS - yes, this means an LX5 review is in the works...!

I walked past someone's front garden today...

Image

Hmmm... is that a... bird.... mummy...?? :?
The outside appears to be painted cloth from a dress or something... That's not normal...

And that human form... surely just a statue... is it? Those clothes... seem real... but treated with... something...

Do I smell some faint odour... emba...

*sound of rapid footsteps disappearing in the distance*

Some basic adjustments. No cropping. Click for larger version
Fuji S9600 - 1/170 - f 3.5 - ISO 80 - 53 mm

Duck!

Camera Model: Canon 7D
Lens and focal length: EF 85mm f/1.8
Aperture: f/2.8
Shutter Speed: 0.6s
Sensitivity: ISO100
Post processing: usual RAW convert stuff

I had a few ideas but the others needed more time, which I've ran out of! So have this rubber duck. Some day I want to see what the real ones down the park make of it.
