i have a D60, and want remote flash triggering, ive heard of pocketwizzard or something but dont know how it works or what you buy.

do you get the same metering from the flash if you use a trigger and reciever? or does it not expose the subject propperly?

an idiots guide would be good

Have a look on youtube there are a couple of "how to" videos for the pocketwizard triggers

Also have a look for the Nikon CLS videos to compare the systems.

It seems the triggers are just that, no metering of other information is sent so it just fires the flash.

check out Bert Stefani or 'confessions of a photographer'. He has great tips on how to get the most out of flash photography.
I work frequently with pocketwizards since upgrading from infrared like the canons ST E2. When I first started out on wireless flash it took a bit to understand.


unless you get the latest pocket wizard, the mini and flex, its all manual to get the exposures correct. It takes a bit of understanding and practice to get right. I use pocket wizard plus II, they are very reliable and work a fair distance.

for pocket wizards and most transceivers and receivers you need one for the camera sitting ontop and one for each flash attached by cord.

For shooting wireless flash set the shutter to maybe 1/160th
-shutter contols the ambient light but is the only setting not to affect the flash power from 30sec-1/2000th.

Then place the flash where you think would suit. working with the setting below should help you get the correct exposure but all have factors that can affect how an image can turn out. e.g aperture/DOP, ISO/noise.
-aperture and iso can control the exposure of the flash.
-moving the flash closer or turning the flash's power up controls the exposure from the flash aswell.


Google and Youtube helps with everything. A lot of info on blogs.

Heres a photo and link for example where I had to boost up the ISO for ambient light from the sunset using speedlites/strobes.

I would also suggest you look at Alienbees Cybersyncs as an alternative to pocket wizards, available in both ac and battery powered versions. The transmitter is also cheaper, and you will find that they are just as reliable as pocket wizards.

I have been looking at the PW Flex system TT1 & TT5 it seems these are the only way to get TTL flash control with a remote flash. (Radio poppers do too but they cheat)

Check out the PW AC3 controller too which for about £60 fits on top of the TT1 Mini and can control not only the TTL setup of the remotes but can also switch the remotes to manual and set their power from on top of the camera.. sweeeet!

You can even have your key light in TTL (in case the subjects are moving closer/further away from the flash eg: dancing at a wedding) and the background lights on manual.

It allows 3 flash groups too just like E-TTL and iCLS.


I believe the Nikon versions are out now so I would hunt down some reviews and check out the propaganda on the PW site.

Yes, ebay search for PT-04. Those are about 5 USD for a transmitter. Dont know about the receivers though.
