I just got back from a reptile day, arranged at short notice. Haven't downloaded anything yet. Need food first!

I used flash most of the time. Tried a mix of ceiling bounce (room was entirely white), direct, and with a small diffuser. Ceiling bounce seemed most consistent. The others were prone to over-exposure.

The flash was getting very slow to recharge at the end of the day, even with replacing the batteries twice. Think it might be overheating? Batteries were coming out HOT. I need to check the manual but the chances are I went far over its heat limit. Dunno how many shots I took yet, but I didn't fill two cards, so I'd estimate 600 shots after the ones I deleted on the way. Very slow for me! I even turned on RAW...

Most of it was short range, although for full body shots I might have got as much as 2m away using Sigma 150mm macro, occasionally with 1.4x teleconverter. Also used a little 15-85 but it really wasn't in the same sharpness league as the macro.

I also tried some shots without flash, or with flash but long exposure. Makes me want to upgrade my tripod... had some vibration issues there.

All very hot there too! Gonna cool down and go through pics later tonight...

For starters, here's a few of a red eye tree frog.

The old advice of focusing on the closest eye in shallow DoF... what happens if you reach the next step? I had some shots where I had to decide if I wanted to focus on the surface of the eye or the iris.
