I have the 50mm f/1.4

For me it was really worth it over the 1.8. I dislike that it doesnt come with a hood though.

I got the 1.8 because it was all I could afford at the time. It was totally worth the price though.

No, up until now only Macro primes have IS and the tele primes. Sadly not under 100mm.

I have both 1.8 & 1.4 Had 1.8 for few months and it is a good lens except one problem. Mine kept on missing focus 2~3 times out of 10... I tested its focusing ability and it was inaccurate 10-20% of the times... didn't like that so bought 1.4. Keep rate is much higher and focusing is much better. It has better build, better focusing, better weight & size, faster, and better performance at equal aperture... much better lens, worth the money imo.

I use 1.8, it was the one that i could afford

Which I bought isnt a Canon lens, but I use it on a Canon.

For 15 euros I bought the 50mm F/1,7 from Minolta, the MD version.
With the Minolta MD-Eos adapter I can use all Minolta MD and MC lenses, which are REALLY cheap here. The adapter was 25 euros...
However, the 50mm 1,7 is sharp without adapter, but I was very supprised the IQ with adapter is sharp too! Even @ f/1,7!
With aperture ring, this lens is ideally for macro photos with extension tube (since electronic lenses are wide open when it's not fitted on the camera).

So, to all Canon users: Buy that adapter and look on eBay for that lens!

I have the f1.4. Superb lens for the price.

The optical quality is excellent (I would hope better than the f1.8 ) and it is a lot cheaper than the silly-money f1.2L. Also, with my 40D's APS-C sensor it gives an effective focal length of 80mm - perfect for portraits.

I have seen a couple of reviews which say that the image quality of the 1.4 is virtually indistinguishable from the 1.2 in the real world, and at 1/3 of the price!

I have no hesitation in recommending this lens.

does the sound of 1.8 bothers you? because it seems loud O_o and embarrassing to use it in quite places like church wedding or christening.

50mm 1,2L... The quality, the sharpness, the Bokehliciousness, And the good CA Control.

This is probably just me: I prefer Canon "L" series. I dont really like the plasticly made lenses.

50mm 1,2L is not really super pricey as the 85mm 1,2L is. So I would definitely go for the 50mm 1,2L.

But I never buy my lenses in Europe... I buy them in Asia... its like 40% cheaper + tax refund

But I've already bought a 50mm, but third party. I will probably buy the 50mm 1.2L later.... not going to keep the 3rd party lenses forever!

My 50mm f1.4 just broke while nothing major happened. I don't even know what happened because when it broke it was in my bag. So probably somebody bumped into me, right in the sweetspot for this lens.

But when I went to the repair shop they told me the f/1.4 was really vulnerable to any kind of hit.

So just wanted to let you know, be careful with your f/1.4 because it breaks really easily!

Got the 1.4 – basically because the 1.8 felt a bit too toy’ish and I couldn’t afford the 1.2 version.
So far, I think it’s doing an ok job for what I got it for, which is blurring out the background and for that only. Doing portraits and commercial product photos. As for an everyday walk-a-around lens- I think (the 80mm on my 7D) is a bit too long for the way I shoot. For that, I prefer my 17-55mm or the 15-85 when light isn’t an issue, by far. – And also under low light situations I prefer my 17-55mm f.2.8 over the 50mm 1.4. The 17-55mm has got IS and in my opinion- it doesn’t hunt as much on the auto focus. But all in all, the 50mm f1.4 is a great lens and it performs very well for what I’m using it for….So
On another note - Wouldn’t mind if Canon would release an upgrade to the 28mm f2.8- maybe f1.4 or a 35mm 1.4 none L.

I purchased the 1.2L through a parallel importer in NZ (ex Singapore or Hong Kong, not quite sure) for about $300 less than the cheapest NZ Canon model.

I wanted the 1.2 for some night stuff I want to do, bokeh and build quality. Had a little play and so far very impressed.
