he was moving.... just very slowly, and for no more than maybe 3 metres at a time

I'm by no means an expert but I think this also would have looked good with a wider aperture to bring the foreground into focus a lil more. I think a sharp railway line would lead the viewers eye up to the subject nicely.

a wider aperture would create a thinner depth of field, not a greater one. (and i was already at 200mm @ 2.8).

but i understand what you are saying. i left it wide open, because i didn't want the trees in the background to be too distracting, so i felt it was a necessary sacrifice.
