Nice review Gordon. I was really surprised to see that heavy 70-200 mounted to that Gorillapod. I guess I'll be finding a spot in my camera bag for the Gorillapod SLR Zoom. I hate the idea of traveling with a big, heavy tripod and head, but like the benefits of using a tripod for night photography. I guess this device solves that problem.

I've been tempted by one of these, specifically for my 9 month trip around the world as I won't be taking a normal tripod.

That's a perfect choice for an around-the-world trip. When you're in remote areas and packing everything around the last thing you want to do is lug around some big heavy tripod. I guess you could buy one of those $2400 titanium tripods....

Im one for cycling round town on my bike with my camera in my bag, rather than carting a tri-pod on my back aswell, i think this might be the option for me...Might try for a freebie when i go to Jessops for my upgrade!!

It's never occurred to me before but I wonder if anyone manufactures a clip to allow you to attach a tripod to the down-tube? I must do a bit of Googling later, when I have time.

In some of the picture you had the camera on some kind of mount then the Gorillapod what is it?

Hi Marzy, some of those were stock images from Joby, but it's just a normal tripod head. I found the Gorillapod was most practical with a good quality ball and socket head - anthing bigger looks silly!

Telexstar, that's an awesome itinerary - feel free to ask ny Qs about NZ in the travel section - or indeed about any of the other locations! I can highly recommend a 4WD trip on the Bolivian Altiplano, and even though it's really touristy, I loved the scenery of Halong Bay in Vietnam.

The Gorillapod would be a great companion on a big trip like this...

i was watching a video and one of the people taking photos there had one of his point and shoot and it was pretty cool. I think it is really something to get. It is awesome that they are so cheap.

That's going to be a trip of a lifetime, maybe two lifetimes. Did you book all of the flights yourself or was it a package deal?

You'll have to keep us up to date here and post some photos of your adventure.

Well, we went through an agent to book the main flights but it's not a set package as such. You choose the locations you want to fly to and the agent tries to find the best flight. In order to keep costs down you have to take certain flights to specified destinations (In order to go to Nepal, we *have* to fly to New Delhi for example).

I will most certainly be stopping by while I'm away though
