Thanks AL :) That really means a lot coming from you. I'm still learning, but this one is probably my favourite of the photos I've submitted so far.

@Bramsey89: I'm a sucker for HDR-style vivid colours, and your submission just knocks it out of the park I reckon :)

How do people feel about the use of watermarks or copyright text in these competitions?

Some do, some don't. To my mind they are ugly and detract from the picture and count against them when I come to vote.

It may be that I haven't submitted anything worth stealing yet, so I have never felt the need to deface my images with my copyright claim. However, since we submit images of just 500 pixels, no one is going to steal and present them as as their own, are they?

I've never seen this sort of thing in camera club competitions. I wonder what the thinking is here.

I agree with Brian's comments, I wish people would steal my shots then I would know I must be getting better. :D

Cheers

At this stage in my experience of photography, I wouldn't dream of being so self-absorbed as to assume that people want to steal my photographs. :)

For me, unless you're actively selling photos or you have really, really strong views about copyright, I don't know why you'd stick a big ugly watermark on a submission to On Assignment. I'm not going to sell any photos for a long, long time, if at all, and if somebody wants to use something I've shot, good on them.

Too modest, Synchestra. I wouldn't mind claiming your image from Bellingen as my own this month (but I won't).

Good shots from everyone, my vote went to Al because to me the shot portrays a peaceful and tranquil life I would expect in a village, no cars allowing the walker to use the middle of the road.

I took a scenic Sunday drive to two small villages and found them being spoilt by advertising signs from ice cream to beer and ended up not taking a shot so no entry from me, the lunch at the pub was good so the day was not wasted. :)

Cheers

21ST AUGUST - POLLS CLOSED - WE HAVE A WINNER!!

Congratulations to Synchestra who won with 15% of the overall votes, followed by Bramsey89 in second place with 10%, and AL, Jagadish_C, Jagadish_C and Zyklusx, who all came joint third with 8% each.

As always, this means Synchestra gets to choose the theme for the next assignment in September, and has until the end of August to tell us what it is, along with any extra rules. Synchestra, please let us know your theme in this thread. Thanks and congratulations once more!

Gordon

Wow, that was totally unexpected! Thanks for your votes of confidence, everybody; it's really encouraging for a learner like myself.

After a little bit of thought, the theme for next month's assignment is un-natural. You can interpret that any way you like - I can think of at least two ways you could approach the assignment, and I'm sure there are more. I'd really like to see people push the boundaries on this one :)

If you feel like a series would express your idea better than a single photo, feel free to enter up to three shots, arranged however you like, but they have to be obviously connected.

Last thing: please keep the PP to a minimum; levels, contrast, sharpening etc are all OK but keep that Warp tool where it belongs.

Looking forward to seeing what you talented people come up with!
