Just saw today where they announced the new FZ40 and FZ100 due out in late August. Does the FZ40 replace the FZ38. The FZ100 sounds like a compact camera and I already have the FZ7 so I don't need another new small compact. Would like the FZ40 if the is the size of the FZ38.
They don't show a pic of the cameras coming out. I was surprised what I think is the compact was more $ than the regular size.

I hate to ask questions that experienced photographers consider amateurish, but what exactly is a hybrid camera?

After trying to pick everyone's brain about the new FZ40-FZ100 announced today, I got on google and got my answers. FZ100 is the replacement for FZ35. It will range in price from $499 to $550 . The FZ40 is the lesser of the two in quality and will sell for around $399. I am going for the FZ100. I had been contemplating getting an SLR, but with no more experience than I have other than loving photography, and the thought of toting around lenses, cleaning, price, (etc) I am going to wait until Camera Labs has the FZ100 to sell. HURRY CAMERA LABS, I would rather get it from you.

Hi Mimi ! I think that hybrid camera make pictures and videos, so "bye bye" camcorders.

I might be wrong, ( I am an amateur ) but I think a hybrid camera is the name given to the type of cameras between compact cameras and DSLR cameras. Hybrid cameras create better quality photos than compacts and give you the manual control of a DSLR without the complication of changing lenses and heavy bulk to carry around with you.

Hybrid cameras are also known as bridge cameras - named possibly becuase they are a bridge between compacts and DSLRs?
They may also be called prosumer cameras - "Prosumer" is a word often used about cameras that is targetted for sale to people on the border line between being consumers and professional users.
Then there's the new micro 4/3 cameras, I don't know much about them at all

FZ100 is not in my opinion a replacement for FZ35. In fact it is the FZ45
that matches almost feature for feature the FZ35.
The FZ100 is designed to be more of a Video cam in my opinion. It is using
a sensor similar to those used in Panasonic video cams (MOS).
I wonder if the IQ of this FZ100 sensor will even match the quality of the
CCD sensor in the FZ45?
Anyone wishing to buy a FZ100 should wait for commercial availability and
user feedback to ensure that its sensor is able to provide decent still
photos. As a Video camera, and the MOS sensor, it will probably be
outstanding.
