I might be wrong, ( I am an amateur

) but I think a hybrid camera is the name given to the type of cameras between compact cameras and DSLR cameras. Hybrid cameras create better quality photos than compacts and give you the manual control of a DSLR without the complication of changing lenses and heavy bulk to carry around with you.
Hybrid cameras are also known as bridge cameras - named possibly becuase they are a bridge between compacts and DSLRs?
They may also be called prosumer cameras - "Prosumer" is a word often used about cameras that is targetted for sale to people on the border line between being consumers and professional users.
Then there's the new micro 4/3 cameras, I don't know much about them at all
