Thought I would do a small review on this lens.

I have owned this lens for over a year now, I am happy and sad with the results.

Pros: Optical Quality is sharp at F/4. , Vibration Reduction works great, Weight is good, not to heavy at all, great range.

Cons: Super Slow Autofocus, Plastic Mount, focus ring is NOT smooth and catches.

I found while shooting with this lens the past month I realized that when set to F/4 it is relatively sharp. (has to be at 18mm)

This is a great lens for those who do not want the 18-55 kit lens. Rather this is an upgrade kit lens between the 18-55 and the 18-200mm.

I am currently wanting to replace this lens with a wider model, and a higher build quality one at that.

You should check out my review first. :) Btw,the lens is decent fast in focusing. What are you talking about?

I suspect the focus speed is relative, compared to my Tamron 70-300 the Nikon is faster. How slow is slow and what lens have you tried that locks on faster?

0.2-0.3 seconds in a well lighted environment is bloody slow?

My 18-105mm VR came with my D90 kit. I used it for 6 months before I sold it(didn't like the plastic mount), and the focusing on it was quite speedy, I thought. I even used it some indoors in lowlight stuff, and the focus was still fairly quick, especially for the conditions. The focusing speed would be one of my last complaints about the lens.
