For a cheap long lens I'd say one of those F/8 500mm mirror lenses would be a better choice than a scope.

A mirror lens is essentially the same as a similar construction scope, just a small one with a camera mount on it.

I know, but the 500mm makes it easier to steady. Same for the F/8, which also means less diffraction

I got a question about the motor: Will it track stars correctly in 2 dimensions, or does the motor only move to the side?

It tracks in two dimensions, and the tripod comes with a wedge built in so you can set it up equatorial style and eliminate rotation too.

It should track good enough, but personally I'm lazy so never got it quite perfect...
