Primitive, I disagree about the part of your last post regarding the prices. I can't find it now, but a while ago we have compared prices of Canon, Nikon and Sony when it came to lenses etc, and it varied widely, depending on the lens. You can't say, generally spoken that is, Sony is more expensive - at least not in my opinion.

I'll see if I find that price comparison and if I find it I'll post it .

Compared to Nikon and Canon, you are right. What I meant was that Sony has a habit of introducing products at way too high a price point.

A good example was the A850, which when released, cost more than the A900 and almost as much as the 5D MK2 (which kinda defeats the purpose)! They also seem to have delusions of grandeur. The A550 is a nice camera, and most reviewers view it favorably, but I dont think pricing it in the same league as the D90 is doing Sony any favors, especially considering that the D90 is more "feature rich" on paper and also one of the best selling DSLRs around.

So, my take on it is that if you're the underdog, you need to start acting like it.

Given that I already think the Panasonic and Olympus cameras are over priced to begin with (I can't understand how a camera with less stuff costs more than a dslr with far greater capability and features. The only advantage is size, and I can't imagine that's the only reason for such high prices), Sony will at best, probably match the introductory prices of these cameras.

But, its a wait and see. If the specs add up, and the camera costs less than 500.00 with a kit lens, I think it can be successful. Fingers crossed!

Here's a nice site that lists the Canon, Nikon and Sony lenses including their lowest retail price in the UK.

A couple of things become immediately obvious. Sony's lens prices aren't significantly different from Canon/Nikon offerings if you are comparing like for like. However, Canon and Nikon offer far more choices in lenses than Sony does and this does Sony no favors when it comes to price. E.g. I want an 85mm prime, Sony forces you to go down the Carl Zeiss route and spend nearly £1000. The quality is there in Sony's lens lineup, they just need to broaden the choices offered to consumers.

It is unusual for anything to be released on a Sunday...

Disappointing. That's my take on it. My source is great at predicting DSLR announcements, perhaps mirrorless camera's just aren't his thing. Although, I heard that a Sony employee, independently from my source, also mentioned the 18th as an important date... :?

All we know is that the mirrorless bodies will also be called Alpha, so I guess the NEX name is no longer true.

The source has now moved the announcement date prediction towards the end of May.

OK guys, new date: May 11th. Same reliable source, on a Tuesday, which makes more sense. Hmmm, let's wait and see!

If 11th May is indeed the scheduled date, it would be a pretty bad timing in my opinion, as Apple schedules to open up the international order of iPads on 10th.

The Sony mirrorless bodies serve an entirely different market than the iPad, though it's probably true some people will only have the money to buy just one of the two.
Importantly, I assume the 11th will be the announcement day only, it won't actually be available yet right on that day.

Perhaps they'll announce the A7XX unexpectedly :P...(I'd like them to do that! Reckon I'm not the only one...)

Actually, I did not think of the budget factor. I was saying that attentions would be on iPad (in many selected countries), rather than other gadgets (such as new cameras).
