I received this week my repaired DA* 50-135mm lens. The SDM motor had to be changed.

Result is, AF has never been so fast.

I hope I'm going to enjoy this lens now for a long time with no more problems.

Is it noticeably faster, or is it just psychological?

I've found the 50-135mm to be not as fast as my Sigma 70-200mm, though it's really really accurate. It's so accurate and sharp it makes your eyes bleed.

Sunday was sunny so I went out to test my repaired lens.

• No surprise, image quality is there.
• Big surprise, the SDM AF is really fast, faster than I could remember when I used this lens when I bought it. The lens focuses on a snap. I've never experienced that speed on that lens before.

It's hard to say whether it is psychological. The fact is, my 50-135mm used to be noticeably slower than the 16-50 and the 60-250. Now, it's on par.

I wrote to Pentax France about the SDM motor failure, asking whether there was a problem with the first manufactured lenses.

My DA* 50-135 lens was one of the first ones available in France. The serial number of my lens starts with 900xxxx.

Although I mentioned that serial number in my letter, Pentax France didn't consider my specific case but stated that

Pentax France didn't go further on its answer. Alas, the repair department didn't provide any explanation for the failure of my lens.

Once again, there's room for improvement: terrible communication with customers but rather easy solutions to implement.

Any experiences from other countries ?

I've not needed to send mine in yet, but then it's a relatively new lens. The number is 929xxxx.
