I received this week my repaired DA* 50-135mm lens. The SDM motor had to be changed. :(

Result is, AF has never been so fast. :)

I hope I'm going to enjoy this lens now for a long time with no more problems.

Best regards,

Is it noticeably faster, or is it just psychological? :)

I've found the 50-135mm to be not as fast as my Sigma 70-200mm, though it's really really accurate. It's so accurate and sharp it makes your eyes bleed.

Bonjour,

Sunday was sunny so I went out to test my repaired lens.

  • No surprise, image quality is there.
  • Big surprise, the SDM AF is really fast, faster than I could remember when I used this lens when I bought it. The lens focuses on a snap. I've never experienced that speed on that lens before.

It's hard to say whether it is psychological. The fact is, my 50-135mm used to be noticeably slower than the 16-50 and the 60-250. Now, it's on par.

Check for more here.

Bonjour,

I wrote to Pentax France about the SDM motor failure, asking whether there was a problem with the first manufactured lenses.

My DA* 50-135 lens was one of the first ones available in France. The serial number of my lens starts with 900xxxx.

Although I mentioned that serial number in my letter, Pentax France didn't consider my specific case but stated that
Quote:
Despite all the fuss done on forums, SDM failures are not considered as a hidden defect.

and
Quote:
Lenses should be assessed on a one-by-one case.

Pentax France didn't go further on its answer. Alas, the repair department didn't provide any explanation for the failure of my lens.

Once again, there's room for improvement: terrible communication with customers but rather easy solutions to implement.

Any experiences from other countries ?

I've not needed to send mine in yet, but then it's a relatively new lens. The number is 929xxxx.

Bonsoir,

Any idea about Pentax lenses serial numbering, 7 digits starting with 9?

Best regards,
