I am thinking of getting a UV filter for my lens and also a polarising filter, I have read a few reviews and it seems that Hoya and B+W filters are the best ones to go for. But which one???

Are either better quality than the other (I am going to get the multi-coated one)? I have read that the B+W ones are easier to clean so these have this advantage? Is this an issue anyone here has found?

And that B+W have a brass mount whereas hoya have aluminium? Also is there any difference in picture quality between the two?

I recently looked at a selection of Hoya filters in this post. I can't comment on B+W since I don't have nor ever used them.

In general, filters don't affect quality noticeably except possibly by increased flare, where coated ones help. Cheaper ones might introduce a slight colour cast. So on the budget Hoya filter, I'd suggest HMC UV(0) or UV(C), but avoid UV(N). If you want the best physical protection, Hoya HD is specifically designed with hardened glass, and Ken Rockwell rates them as easy to clean.

For UV and polarising filters, I have always used Hoya's cheapest range for both. They have always done a superb job and I see no reason to pay more for their, I think it is called HD range? I cant comment no B + W, dont really use them, but I think they are rated a little higher than Hoya, so cant be bad in my eyes.
