I would like to know if someone ever tested the Pentax K7 in camera noise reduction. K7 has a bad ISO performance, with basic configuration, but keeps the details at high levels. Sameone ever made a comparison of the detail vs. iso performance using the in camera noise reduction settings?

If there are such a comparison, would you please post a link or the pictures in a reply?

Sadly, Cameralabs do not do any Pentax DSLR reviews because Pentax do not send Gordon review samples. As such, you should head on over to Imaging Resource or DPReview and read the K-7 reviews on those sites. They show the effect of the various levels of noise reduction.

For what it's worth, the K-7 gets criticised for noise in JPEGs. Even then this is blown out of proportion. If you shoot RAW, the amount of noise is similar to cameras in the class (i.e. 7D and D300s). So if you're going to pixel peep at high ISOs, shoot RAW and get a decent converter.

Hi Philip,

Thanks for the tips. At the imaging resource website there is a good comparison of different iso with different noise reduction levels. It seems to me that until 1600 the trade off of noise reduction and detail is reasonable. But on further ISOs the noise reduction starts to be not a good thing.

And you are right, shooting in raw the ISO performance is very good. These new Aperture and Lightroom version softwares cames with very good noise reduction settings. I think that they should work perfectly with K7 raw data.

Thanks again

Bonjour rdettogni,

Please check the extensive tests I've conducted on my Pentax K7:

I hope this could help you :)

Looking at your crops and going by my experience of shooting K-7 JPEGs, I've found the Low and High settings for noise reduction to work best for me. Low is good if you want to remove colour noise but would like a little bit of grain, High is for times when you want output that's as smooth as a baby's butt.

Or just shoot RAW and use a converter like DXO.
