Hey people, I'm using a Nikon D5000 with the stock 18-55mm lens, I was wondering if i could achieve this sort of image:

i can get a F number of 3.5 to 36 depending on zoom, any ideas?

With your current gear, zoom in to 55 mm, stand as close as you can, and set an aperture (in aperture priority) of F/5.6. As far as image settings go: try setting the picture control to vivid with a bit more saturation and contrast, and sharpening to 7. That should do it on the technical side ;)

Well, you can customize your picture control in-camera to do the things I said, to match the image as close as possible.

to completely mimick the effect you probably need nikon D3, and an 85 mm F/1.4 (those are the exact things used in the image) ;)

If you want a cheap alternative to the f1.4 85mm, I'd look for a used prime 50mm on ebay, you could probably get a cheap one for like 100$ http://cgi.ebay.com/Nikon-AF-50mm-f-1-8D-Nikkor-Camera-Lens_W0QQitemZ260571385688QQcmdZViewItemQQptZCamera_Lenses?hash=item3cab43cf58 and put it at a low aperture to get similar results. (maybe stand a bit closer then they would have been)
