Monday evening, after months of saving and long days of waiting for it to come over from the UK, I finally got a Carl Zeiss 85mm f/1.4! Wanted to have this lens since I first held it back in 2008, and finally having it still feels a little unreal.

Firstly, why did I buy it in the UK? Well, a friend of mine, Gustav Kiburg (whom some of you may know as ijsvogel on Dyxum), was invited by Sony as an "Advocate Photographer" to assist at the Focus on Imaging show last weekend. Gustav's photography caugth Sony's attention a few years back and he has since been in close contact with Sony UK and Holland.
At the Focus show, camera stores sell cameras, lenses and accessories, and what's more, they sell 'em at great prices! So Gustav got me the 85mm for £809,- (roughly €900,), whereas it would have cost me €1128,- here in Holland. So, I saved quite some cash, which of couse, is a great start for the 35mm f/1.4 G I want to get next! :D

Anyway, enough storytelling. I don't have any pictures uploaded because I'm in the middle of my uni exams and don't really have time to do that. I do, however, have an unboxing video (which in hindsight cost more time than a couple of videos). Took me all night and most of this morning to upload (I guess 15 hours in total, internet isn't too fast), so I'll be very happy if it gets as many views as some of the other unboxing vids!

Image

Photos will be uploaded in the Lens Gallery section in a couple of weeks! Of course, you'll see quite a couple come along the the Photo of the Day thread in the Off Topic section as well!

Nice video although I personally more like your 24-70 one, but that's probably just me being interested so much in it...

Boy, I sure regret not being into portrait photography...Sony's CZ primes are superb ones.

Have fun with it, Bjorn! I'm fairly sure you love that thing more than anything else in the world now :P.

Thanks Adi! Glad to hear you like the music, so do I! :D

Joris, how many times have you watched my 24-70mm unboxing? Haha! Thanks!

Here's a first shot I just took half an hour ago. Got tired of my Operations Management book, so went out to the local park.

Looks like someone's a bit jealous  Just kidding.

That lens is a portrait shooters dream, so you'll have to understand those of us that are 'woop di do' until we see some solid portraits with it ;)

'Grats on the new toy :)

Do you want a honest answer to that question  ?

A very nice first one...conditions look pretty good as well (not surprisingly, since the weather here was rather good as well around here, and you don't live that far away after all).

Love the tiny DoF and bokeh.

Thanks WestCoast! Much appreciated, such comments!

Thanks Greg! I have a couple of portrait shoots scheduled after my exams, and I'll make sure you guys get to see a couple of my faves!

Yes, Joris, an honest answer please! I'll admit that I've watched the 135mm f/1.8 Zeiss unboxing posted here in another thread about 12 times already. And thanks! The weather is quite good (my hand were freezing though). The DoF is just great to play with!

Thanks Victor!

Well done Bjorn!

Did you end up getting it for the price you wanted? I know you had issues with Sony where you lived and the price compared to in the UK.

I still want the 135 though!

Nice lens Bjorn!

That is quite a beast, love it. The depth of field is incredible, can't wait to see those portraits. Can Imagine its built like a brick.

Personally I don't know what to save up for next, the 85mm f1.4 or the (concept) 24mm f2. I think I'm looking for something slightly wider next.

Mal, why don't you join me in saving up for the 35mm f/1.4? The 24mm Zeiss seems to be near completion, should be available at around PhotoKina or earlier, but the 35mm is a great lens too!

I want the 135mm too Leonard! Haha! Yes, I did get it for the price I wanted, about €230,- cheaper than here in Holland. I would've saved €340,-on the 35mm f/1.4, but that was out of stock...

EDIT: typed PMA instead of PhotoKina...
