Post subject: New Card for Rebel
PostPosted: Tue Mar 02, 2010 2:53 pm
Hello,

I want to upgrade the memory card for Canon 400D. I have been using a 1GB Kinston CF card.. I do not have further details about this card.

I shoot mostly in RAW so I feel I need to get a faster card which has more capacity (min of 2 gb).

Does Canon 400D support bigger capacity cards >2gb?
What is the difference between CF card and SD card?

Please suggest me.

I'm pretty sure it supports more than 2 GB's, but I can't back it up (check your manual).

As far as speed goes: I wouldn't go higher than a Sandisk Ultra II, above that I think the camera will bottleneck and you will have wasted your money. Class 4 should be sufficient.

The manual seems to have limited information it says:

"either of Type I or Type II cards can be inserted in the camera. The cam isalso compatible with Microdrive (hard disk-type) and CF cards with 2GB or higher capacity".

what are these Type I and Type II and CF cards different for SD cards??

I don't know, but the "CF cards with 2GB or higher capacity" sounds like you can fit any card in there.

Type I and Type II refer to physical size (thickness). I'm also pretty sure it'll support any capacity.

If cost is not a major hurdle, the new Sandisk Extreme is the one I'd pick. It's faster than Extreme IV, while similar in cost to Extreme III. Having said that, it doesn't seem to be available in lower capacities. I do agree with Cirtuspers that it is unlikely your camera will make use of the full speed, but if you have a suitable card reader it will transfer to computer faster, plus gives you a degree of future potential should you upgrade bodies.

On the value end, it does look like the Ultra II has now been replaced by the Ultra (30MB/s). Sandisk don't make their names easy do they? I think that's the same speed rating as the Extreme III which again should be fast enough not to limit the camera.
